The moment I got next to my new friend and caressed his neck, he let out a more intimidating scream than Schubacka, the faithful friend of Hans Solo in Star Wars.
Even though I have ridden a lot on horses, this was a totally new experience. Since these beasts are of a considerable size you mount them while they rest on the ground. They first stretch their hind legs (at this point you are about to fall forwards) and later the front legs.
We later set off
to the horizon, these ships of the desert would carry us along a
3 day trip through the lower Kalahari.
Camels are far slower and to all our surprise they were quite comfortable. They have a slow gentle pace and since their feet are fully cushioned for sandy terrain’s it feels you are stepping on cotton.
After a two hour of ride, we stopped for some lunch. The camels rested while we have some snacks under some solitary trees in the middle of that deserted scenery. Then once again to our first camp for the night.
Camels are not as docile as horses. They are very much herd animals
and they will follow whoever is in front, usually this leader will remain
the same for the whole expedition but they have been know to change.
It is very difficult to make them turn in a specific direction or make them trot, but we managed this speed rush at the sole cry of "op op op". We raced on several occasions and my father to this date claims his victories, unfortunately the leader this time, did not change.
We braaied some chicken and had some salad that night. We slept under the clearest sky I have ever seen. There was no moon but I could still see my shadow from the light of the stars.
The next day we saddled up and off to the next overnight camping point. At all times we had a caravan following us with all our food and sleeping gear.
The heat of the sun, that dry air, my travelling companion, that magic semi-deserted landscape, no man made structure for miles and miles, I was feeling I had travelled back in time and was heading to my harem. Pity all I managed to see at the horizon on our way back was my car waiting to take me home.
